SpaceX Stock Falls 9% After First Earnings Call as AI Spending Raises Investor Concerns

SpaceX stock came under heavy pressure Wednesday after the company's first earnings report as a public company. Shares initially fell about 9%, with the decline later reaching roughly 12%, as investors reacted to the company's massive spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The sell-off came despite SpaceX reporting strong revenue growth and better-than-expected quarterly results.

SpaceX reported $7.8 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, up approximately 92% from $4.1 billion a year earlier. The figure also beat Wall Street expectations of about $6.9 billion.
The company's Starlink satellite internet business remained a major source of revenue, while its rapidly expanding AI business delivered significant growth.
SpaceX also reported a loss of 9 cents per share, which was better than analysts' expected loss of 26 cents per share.

The biggest concern for investors was spending.
SpaceX spent more than $18 billion on capital expenditures during the quarter, compared with about $2.83 billion a year earlier. Around $15.8 billion was directed toward AI infrastructure, including data-center capacity and related technology.
Investors are now questioning whether SpaceX can generate enough revenue and cash flow from its AI ambitions to justify such enormous spending.
The company says its AI business is already showing strong early returns. AI revenue reportedly reached $2.6 billion, more than three times the amount recorded a year earlier. SpaceX also secured another $6.7 billion in cloud-computing contracts after the quarter ended.
300x250 ads:Starlink Remains a Key Business
Starlink continues to be one of SpaceX's most important sources of revenue.
The satellite internet service reached approximately 12 million subscribers, with revenue rising strongly during the quarter. Starlink's growing cash generation is particularly important because SpaceX is using its broader business to help fund its aggressive investments in AI and other technologies.
However, investors are concerned about how long Starlink can continue supporting such a large investment program.
300x250 ads:More Pressure Could Come From Share Unlock
SpaceX is also facing another potential source of volatility.
A post-IPO lock-up expiration is allowing up to 912 million previously restricted shares held by employees and early investors to become eligible for sale. If large numbers of shareholders sell, the additional supply could put further pressure on the stock.
That makes the coming weeks particularly important for SpaceX investors.
300x250 ads:What Investors Are Watching Now
Wall Street will be watching several key areas in SpaceX's next earnings reports:
- AI revenue and profitability
- Capital spending and cash flow
- Starlink subscriber growth
- Starlink profitability
- SpaceX's launch business
- Future AI infrastructure investments
- The impact of newly unlocked shares
SpaceX has ambitious plans to expand its AI and satellite businesses, but investors now want to see whether those investments can eventually produce sustainable returns.
300x250 ads:Bottom Line
SpaceX's first earnings report delivered strong revenue growth but also revealed enormous spending requirements.
The company's $7.8 billion quarterly revenue and rapidly growing AI business show significant momentum. However, the more than $18 billion in quarterly capital spending has raised concerns about cash burn and the sustainability of its investment strategy.
For now, the market is sending a clear message: strong growth is not enough—investors want to see a path toward sustainable profits and cash flow.
SpaceX stock's sharp decline following the earnings call shows how closely Wall Street will scrutinize the company's spending and financial performance in the quarters ahead.
