YouTube’s New Policy: What Creators Need to Know in 2026

YouTube is introducing major changes to its monetization rules, making it more important than ever for creators to produce original and engaging content.

Starting February 1, 2027, new creators applying for YouTube Partner Program (YPP) ad and YouTube Premium revenue will need 8,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. The new requirements will not affect creators who are already in YPP.

AI Content Faces More Scrutiny

YouTube has also clarified its rules around AI-generated and repetitive content. Videos that are mass-produced, repetitive, template-based or created mainly for content farming may not qualify for monetization.

However, AI itself is not banned. YouTube says creators can still use AI when it helps produce original, creative and valuable content.

YouTube is also improving AI-content disclosure. Its systems can automatically detect significant photorealistic AI-generated content and apply an AI label when appropriate.

What Creators Should Do

Creators should focus on original scripts, meaningful editing, unique storytelling, commentary and genuine audience value rather than uploading large numbers of nearly identical AI-generated videos.

The message from YouTube is clear: AI can be a tool for creativity, but low-effort content farming could put monetization at risk.

With these changes, creators who build authentic audiences and consistently publish original content are likely to be in a stronger position going forward.
